Preparing for Severe Weather with Medical Conditions

Lafayette,LA- Several power companies like SLEMCO continue to monitor Hurricane Ida. They want the community to know that they have brought in more manpower ahead of time. They currently have are staging in five different so that where ever the damage they can get to customers quickly.

South Louisiana is set to see impacts from Ida Sunday. Communications Manager at SLEMCO, Mary Laurent says they started preparing last week for a possible storm to hit the area. "Making sure that we have every kind of supplies, every kind of material that we would need to restore power. We have hurricane packs that we are going to put on each truck that comes in from out of state to come help us and just so they could hit the ground running."

Laurent says that those with medical needs that rely on power should consider having a backup plan if they don't have another energy source. "If this storm is a direct hit we’re not going to be able to make sure that we get power to everyone that has a medical need. Every person has to take responsibility for their own family and make sure that they are self-sustaining for a few days."

Dr. Britni Herbet says aside from being stocked up on medications and contacts in case of an emergency, having a sharpie could be helpful for those with medical needs. "If you are going to be separated from someone who has special needs that you may want to be able to write on their arm contact information so that you can be reunited after evacuation."

She also says knowing that certain areas usually see the power to go out first, those with medical conditions should evacuate immediately. "To somewhere that you will have uninterrupted power supply and resource supply. Ithink that being in a place where you don’t go without important medical needs is the most safe way."
